From Village Roots to Mountain Biking Pioneer
Mangal Krishna Lama's journey from a small farming village in Kakani to becoming Nepal's premier mountain biking guide and the first person to conquer the Great Himalaya Trail on wheels is a testament to his passion, determination, and love for the mountains.

Growing up in a farming family with limited resources, Mangal faced the responsibilities of supporting his family from an early age. At just 15, he made the bold decision to move to Kathmandu in search of opportunities, eventually finding his way into the cycling industry. Starting as an unpaid apprentice at a bike shop in Thamel, Mangal would wake up at 4:30 am daily to commute from his village, laying the physical and mental foundation for his future career.
The Journey to Professional Racing
Despite minimal support and financial constraints, Mangal's determination to pursue mountain biking professionally never wavered. Training in secret and securing loans from his family to purchase his first racing bike, he participated in his first international race in Sikkim in 2007—a pivotal moment that opened his eyes to the world of professional mountain biking.
Over the following years, Mangal competed in numerous national and international races, building his reputation within the mountain biking community. His racing achievements include:
- Multiple podium finishes in the challenging Yak Attack race through the Annapurna region
- First place in both individual and team categories at the Kanchenjunga Mountain Bike Expedition (2008)
- Consistent top-three finishes in Nepal's national mountain biking championships
The Historic GHT on Wheels
In 2022, Mangal achieved what many considered impossible—becoming the first person to successfully ride the entire 1,700km Great Himalaya Trail solo on a mountain bike. This groundbreaking 88-day journey took him through some of the most remote and challenging terrain in the Himalayas.

Beyond personal achievement, the GHT on Wheels project embodied Mangal's commitment to:
- Promoting mountain biking in Nepal by mentoring young riders, exploring and building new trails
- Promoting sustainable tourism in lesser-known areas of Nepal
- Raising awareness about climate change impacts on mountain communities
- Supporting local economies through adventure tourism
- Documenting the diverse cultures and landscapes along the trail
