More about Mustang

Mustang has a rich history that dates back centuries. The region was once an independent kingdom, with its own king and government. The kingdom was closed to foreigners until 1992, when it was opened to tourism. Today, Mustang is a popular destination for adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts alike. The region's history and culture are well-preserved, thanks to its isolation and the efforts of the local people to maintain their traditions.

Mustang is home to the Thakali people, who are native to the region and have a rich cultural heritage. The Thakali are known for their unique customs, traditions, and festivals, which are deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism. Visitors can experience the authentic culture of the Thakali people by attending the Tiji festival in Lo-Manthang, which is a significant event in the region. The festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil and is marked by colorful processions, traditional dances, and sacred rituals.

Mustang is accessible by air and land. Visitors can fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then take a connecting flight to Jomsom, the starting point for most treks in the region. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus or jeep from Kathmandu to Jomsom, which takes around 18 to 24 hours.

Visitors to Mustang need to obtain a special trekking permit, which can be arranged through government-registered trekking organizations. The permit costs USD 500 for 10 days and USD 50 per day for extensions. Visitors can choose from a range of accommodation options, including lodges, guesthouses, and camping sites.

The best time to visit Mustang is from September to November or March to May, when the weather is pleasant and the scenery is at its best. Visitors who are interested in attending the Tiji festival should plan their trip between April and May.
